Special Exhibits
Not only will this museum amaze you with it's outstanding collections.  The staff will warm your hearts with their hospitality. You will be overwhelmed with the information and if you are wanting to slow the pace down and reminisce through pictures visit the newly redesigned “Network and Hospitality Room”.  You will be overwhelmed with information and researching ability that this area offers.  Let your journey of stepping back in time begin.  The pride and care of each exhibit shows throughout the tour of the museum. 

The downstairs area begins with:
  • The WPA and 1930 Dust Bowl Era - pictures and antique items will have you amazed of the devastation of the dust bowl, yet you will witness the creativeness of the WPA work first hand. 
  • Doctor’s of the Old West - gratefulness will overwhelm you when you witness the “old time” ways of medicine.  
  • Union County and its surrounding towns,  to read the history of the beginning times of these booming towns  and witness where they are today.  
  • Dinosaurs roamed this area 100 million years ago – see the extensive display.
  • First Airmail Drop off in the United States…Clayton, NM – yes, it is true!  Find out more.
  • Santa Fe Trail – the oldest regular land route across the Great Plains, see the old rifle pieces, whale oil lamps and other artifacts.  Come see firsthand the treasures that have been found by local ranchers, imagine the stories behind them all.  
  •  Hand Made Quilts from 1895 and Sewing Machines
  • 1920 Permanent Wave Machine – See firsthand the (torture) men and women went thru to have wave in their hair.  
  • The displays of beauty and what it took!
  • Doll Collection – A beautiful "First Lady" doll collection is displayed including President Lincoln and President Washington.
  • The original kitchen holds many amazing treasurers too many to mention.
             

As You Find Your Way To The Second Floor…
  • You will be overtaken by the beautiful original stain glass windows and hardwood floors.
  • Cowboy attire, spurs, guns and stories to go with each of them.
  • Navajo rugs from the Herzstein Collection.
  • Franz Dyche - has a collection that is a must see!
  • Black Jack Ketchum - the outlaw that met his maker in Clayton, NM, see the gory pictures of the hanging that went wrong.  
  • Clayton High School - class rings as far back as 1928 and the famous sweaters that were worn with pride, come see all the memorabilia.
  • Come see the outstanding and simply amazing collection from the Albert and Ethel Herzstein collection.  They were very well traveled and you will come to learn, they loved the orient.
